Carrie

North East School of the Arts presents CARRIE THE MUSICAL, based on STEPHEN KING’S blockbuster novel. Carrie White is a misfit and outcast. She is bullied at school by the popular kids, and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she is at the mercy of a cruelly over-protective mother. But Carrie has discovered she has a special power, and if she is pushed too far, destruction will follow.

Originally developed by Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company, CARRIE THE MUSICAL premiered on Broadway in 1988. In 2012, the show’s original authors regrouped to create a newly reworked and fully reimagined vision of this gripping tale that played to great acclaim Off-Broadway. Set in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine, CARRIE THE MUSICAL features a book by Lawrence D. Cohen (screenwriter of the classic film version starring Sissy Spacek), music by Academy Award winner Michael Gore (Fame, Terms of Endearment), and lyrics by Dean Pritchford (Fame, Footloose).

Carrie is driven to the edge and lashes out because of the extreme bullying and mistreatment she receives at school and at home. These issues of teen abuse and alienation powerfully resonate with many of today’s youth, transforming Stephen King’s story, and this musical, into something much more than a simple story of suspense and the supernatural. North East School of the Arts is working with anti-bullying organizations such as DAVID’S LEGACY FOUNDATION and THE TREVOR PROJECT, in order to share important information and resources with our audience at the performances.

Parents should note that CARRIE THE MUSICAL may not be suitable for younger audiences.
